Dallas Mavericks Sack GM Behind Luka Doncic Trade Backlash

Nico Harrison Dismissed Nine Months After Controversial Deal

The Dallas Mavericks have sacked general manager Nico Harrison, just nine months after the heavily criticised trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers — a move many fans and pundits have labelled one of the worst trades in NBA history.

The decision came a day after Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont attended a narrow 116–114 loss to Milwaukee, where fans once again chanted “fire Nico”, echoing frustration that has lingered since February’s blockbuster swap that brought Anthony Davis to Dallas.

New Interim Leadership Announced

In the wake of Harrison’s departure, the Mavericks have appointed Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi as co-interim general managers to oversee basketball operations while the search for a permanent replacement begins.

Despite hopes that goodwill might return following Dallas’s unlikely success in landing number one draft pick Cooper Flagg with only a 1.8 per cent lottery chance, fan sentiment never recovered.

Empty Seats and Fading Support

Crowds at the American Airlines Center have noticeably thinned this season — a stark contrast to the excitement that surrounded the team back in 2018, when Dallas traded up to draft Doncic with the third overall pick.

At just 25 years old, Doncic was a generational talent entering his prime when Harrison dealt him for Anthony Davis, a star plagued by injuries. Since joining the Mavericks, Davis has missed 30 of 44 regular-season games, fuelling anger among fans.

Fallout From the Doncic Deal

Harrison, in his fourth season with Dallas, previously helped orchestrate trades that pushed the team to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals two years later. But the Doncic trade — combined with a poor 3–8 start to this season — proved to be his undoing.

Davis has already missed six of the first eleven games with a calf injury, leaving the Mavericks struggling both offensively and defensively.

Owner’s Letter to Fans

In an open letter, Dumont admitted the team’s results had fallen far short of expectations.

“No one associated with the Mavericks organisation is happy with the start of what we all believed would be a promising season,” Dumont wrote.

“You have high expectations for the Mavericks, and I share them with you. When the results don’t meet expectations, it’s my responsibility to act.”

While Dumont didn’t directly mention the Doncic trade, he acknowledged the “profound impact” the move had on supporters. The Las Vegas-based Dumont and Adelson families, who purchased the team from Mark Cuban in late 2023, have also been the focus of fan frustration.

Financial and On-Court Consequences

Reports indicate that the controversial trade was partly driven by a desire to avoid committing $346 million over five years for Doncic’s supermax extension.

Harrison attempted to justify the move with his “defence wins championships” mantra. Yet, with Davis sidelined and Kyrie Irving still recovering from an ACL injury, the Mavericks currently have one of the weakest offences in the league.

Last season, Dallas missed the playoffs after Doncic had carried the team to the NBA Finals the year before.

Doncic Shines as Mavericks Struggle

Meanwhile, Doncic has continued to thrive with the Lakers, becoming only the second player in NBA history, alongside Wilt Chamberlain, to start a season with three consecutive 40-point games.

Although sidelined briefly by injury, the Lakers have maintained strong form, going 8–3 to open the season — in stark contrast to Dallas’s dismal start.
