Garden of the Future: From Throne to Tomato
Designers Matthew Butler and Josh Parker, backed by the Gates Foundation, unveiled the “Garden of the Future,” a sustainable showcase featuring a composting toilet that transforms human waste into biochar for gardening. This eco-friendly loo, developed with Cranfield University, also recycles wastewater for irrigation. The garden includes a solar-powered irrigation system and drought-resistant crops like chickpeas and sweet potatoes, reflecting a shift towards climate-resilient gardening practices.
Monty Don’s Dog-Friendly Garden: A Pooch’s Paradise
Renowned gardener Monty Don, in collaboration with BBC Radio 2, introduced his first Chelsea garden designed specifically for dogs. The garden features a robust lawn, non-toxic plants, and a pond for canine companions. Don’s own golden retriever, Ned, inspired the design, which includes pathways created by the dog’s natural movements. After the show, the garden will be relocated to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.
SongBird Survival Garden: A Sanctuary for Songbirds
The SongBird Survival Garden, designed by Nicola Oakey and supported by Project Giving Back, aims to combat the decline of UK songbirds. The garden features thorny trees to deter cats, berry-producing plants, and dense hedges for nesting. It’s designed to mimic a bird’s perspective, encouraging visitors to consider avian needs in their own gardens. Post-show, the garden will be relocated to a community center in Hull.
