The International Weightlifting Federation has awarded the 2030 senior World Weightlifting Championships to Moscow, the first world championships in an Olympic sport to go to Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The IWF announced the decision on Sunday 25 October, BBC Sport and The Kyiv Independent reported. Ahmedabad, India, will host the 2029 senior championships.
“Concerning the IWF (Senior) World Championships in 2029, it will be staged in Ahmedabad (India), and Moscow (Russia) will host the 2030 edition,” the IWF said in a statement, The Kyiv Independent reported.
The federation named hosts for four championships at junior, youth and senior level, according to BBC Sport.
“All the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the championships in your respective countries will be a huge success,” IWF general secretary Jose Quinones said, BBC Sport reported.
Moscow last hosted the world championships in 1983, according to BBC Sport.
A First Since 2022
No world championships in an Olympic sport, summer or winter, have been held in Russia since the war in Ukraine began, BBC Sport reported.
The 2025 World Aquatics Championships moved from Kazan to Singapore, BBC Sport reported.
The decision came four months after the IWF confirmed that Russian athletes were again eligible for its events, according to BBC Sport.
Russian athletes must meet IOC anti-doping requirements to compete internationally, The Kyiv Independent reported.
Some Russian athletes competed as neutrals at the 2024 Paris Olympics and at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, BBC Sport reported.
The IOC Background
On 7 July, the IOC provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, which had been in place since October 2023, The Kyiv Independent reported.
According to The Kyiv Independent, the IOC said a legal review had found that the Russian Olympic Committee “no longer includes as its members any regional sports organizations in territories falling under the jurisdiction of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine.”
Russia has been largely sidelined from Olympic competition since 2017, first over doping and then over the war, The Kyiv Independent reported.
The Pushback
Ukraine’s Olympic committee appealed the IOC decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, The Kyiv Independent and BBC Sport reported. The IOC has said it will not organise its own events in Russia, according to BBC Sport.
Nine European countries urged the European Commission to stop funding international sports bodies that admit Russian and Belarusian athletes, The Kyiv Independent reported.
Russia’s Reaction
“Russia has all the necessary experience and capabilities to host competitions of the highest level,” Russian weightlifting federation president Aleksandr Vinokurov wrote on Telegram, BBC Sport reported.
The Russian Weightlifting Federation said, according to BBC Sport: “[We are] the first Olympic sports federation to succeed in bringing a top-level official competition back to the country in many years.”
Russia has won 17 Olympic weightlifting medals since the fall of the Soviet Union, The Kyiv Independent reported.
The Road to Brisbane 2032
The 2030 championships are a qualifying event for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, BBC Sport reported.
Before then, the 2026 championships in Ningbo, China, are scheduled from 27 October to 8 November. Five Ukrainian athletes are listed for the event, according to BBC Sport.
